Poilievre calls for tariffs on Chinese-made EVs, solar panels, batteries and steel

Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says he would impose big new import taxes on a host of Chinese-made goods including electric cars, solar panels and semiconductors if his party wins the next election. Poilievre made the announcement in Hamilton, standing in front of a few dozen employees at the city's Stelco steel plant. Steel is among the products Poilievre says requires new import tariffs as he accuses China of breaching labour and environment standards to "crush" Canadian industry. Poilievre says the federal Liberals are refusing to follow the lead of U.S. President Joe Biden and protec

Airfares could rise after Calgary hailstorm forces WestJet to cancel flights: expert

An aviation expert says airfares may go up in the immediate aftermath of a hailstorm that tore through Calgary on Monday evening, damaging WestJet planes and upending travel plans. Hailstones as big as golf balls pummelled the tarmac, forcing the Calgary-based airline to ground 10 per cent of its fleet for major repairs and inspections. WestJet says it cancelled 248 flights between Monday and Wednesday, and will have to cut trips across its network for the "foreseeable future." Barry Prentice, who heads the University of Manitoba's transport institute, says a significant scale-back by the coun

High waters that flowed over top of a massive landslide in British Columbia's Chilcotin River are churning in the Fraser River towards British Columbia's Lower Mainland today. Emergency Management Minister Bowinn Ma says the fast-flowing waters are forecast to raise river levels by about a metre at Hope, B.C., located about 150 kilometres east of Vancouver. She says the river levels will be similar to spring runoff conditions on the Fraser River, but there is potential danger from trees and other debris in the river. A landslide last week at Farwell Canyon located about 22 kilometres south of

Canadians urged to leave Lebanon as flights cancelled amid growing tensions

Lara Salameh was supposed to be flying out of Beirut Thursday en route to Montreal with her husband and two daughters, but the night before, their flight was cancelled. She said Air France told her service out of the Lebanese capital was suspended because of the unstable security situation — one that Ottawa has been warning Canadians about as fears of war between Israel and Hezbollah grow. Salameh is one of the 21,399 Canadians registered as being in Lebanon, a country the Canadian government is urging its citizens to leave. It says they can’t rely on government evacuation flights if war e

Israel says it has confirmed Hamas military wing chief Mohammed Deif was killed in a July strike

The Israeli military said Thursday that it has confirmed that the head of Hamas' military wing, Mohammed Deif, was killed in an airstrike in Gaza in July. Israel targeted Deif in a July 13 strike that hit a compound on the outskirts of the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, but the military said for weeks it was working to determine if he died in the blast. Hamas has denied he was killed. More than 90 other people, including displaced civilians in nearby tents, were killed in the strike, Gaza health officials said at the time. In a statement Thursday, the Israeli military said that “followin

The Kingston moved to the waters off Victoria, then days later fire erupted in one of the containers and spread on the ship, taking several days to put out. Just four of the 109 containers that tumbled from the ship were found, although debris, ranging from refrigerators to blow-up unicorns,
