Liberal MPs are meeting in Ottawa today for the first time since Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced he will step down.
The national caucus meeting, set to take place both in person and online, was originally set to last six hours to give MPs time to discuss Trudeau's previous refusal to resign. Biden praises Trudeau as friend, defender of freedom following resignation news
U.S. President Joe Biden says he is proud to call Prime Minister Justin Trudeau a friend as both men now prepare for their departures from leadership.
Biden says he spoke with Trudeau on the phone Monday after the prime minister announced he would resign his post as soon as a new Liberal leader is chosen.
The president will also be vacating the White House later this month when president-elect Donald Trump begins a second administration.

Trudeau Announces Resignation as Party Leader and Prime Minister
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as both the leader of the Liberal Party and as prime minister. Trudeau stated he would remain in office until a new leader is chosen, and that Parliament will be suspended until March 24.
It is noteworthy that Trudeau’s decision comes ahead of the Liberal National Caucus meeting scheduled for Wednesday, during which there had been growing pressure on him to step down. To prevent the government from being toppled by opposition parties, the Governor General has approved the suspension of Parliament until March 24.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says he's seeking the party's nomination to run as a candidate in Edmonton.

Man suspected of killing wife, father-in-law in Calgary found dead outside city
Police say a man they were searching for in a double homicide in Calgary has been found dead. An emergency alert had been issued for 38-year-old Benedict Kaminski, describing him as armed and dangerous.
A woman in her 30s and a man in his 70s were found dead on Sunday at two different locations in Calgary.
Police say the victims are believed to be Kaminski's wife and her father. They say tips from the public lead officers to the Water Valley area, about 80 kilometres northwest of Calgary.

The Atlantic Liberal caucus is calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to resign as party leader in a letter.

US President-elect Donald Trump has once again targeted Canada, as well as Greenland and the Panama Canal, in a Christmas message posted on his social media platform, Truth Social. Canada stops LMIA Points for Express Entry Starting Spring 2025
The Canadian government will stop awarding LMIA points for permanent residency (PR) under Express Entry starting in the spring of 2025. This was announced by Immigration Minister Mark Miller in a press release.
Until now, there was a benefit of receiving an additional LMIA point, ranging from 50 to 200, to qualify for PR. However, due to reports of fraud within the system, the government has decided to withdraw this provision.
