pickup truck crashes into Calgary restaurant, 4 people injured
Four people were injured over the weekend when a pickup truck crashed through the front of a Calgary restaurant.
Police say it happened late Saturday when a GMC Sierra with a 76-year-old man at the wheel drove into Sammy's Chophouse at a high rate of speed.
Three of the injured suffered minor injuries, but one was seriously hurt.
Police said yesterday they were still investigating, but they didn't believe alcohol was a factor, and they said no charges had been laid.

2 people dead after fatal highway collision near Edmonton
Two people who were on a motorcycle have died in a crash near Edmonton.
R-C-M-P in Strathcona County say the collision yesterday afternoon involved the motorcycle, a pickup truck and a car on Highway 628.
Both people on the bike were pronounced dead at the scene.
Police say they're still investigating.

Kenney calls Alberta sovereignty act idea backed by UCP leadership candidate 'nuts'
Alberta Premier Jason Kenney has so far declined to pick a favourite in the race to succeed him, but when asked to comment on a prominent platform plank of one of the leading candidates, referred to it as ``nuts.''

B.C.: Crash on Highway 3 sparks wildfire, evacuation alert issued in area
A crash on Highway 3 between Osoyoos and Cawston has sparked a wildfire that closed the highway earlier today and has now prompted an evacuation alert in the area. The Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen has issued the alert for about two dozen properties south of Cawston along Highway 3 and Sumac Road. The BC Wildfire Service says the blaze has charred about 40 hectares, or just under half a square kilometer, along the road on the west side of Richter Mountain. Lethbridge woman assaulted, shot in back with BB gun: police
Police in Lethbridge are looking for four men accused of assaulting a women earlier this week.
The 24-year-old reported she had been assaulted while walking home from work.
Police say a verbal altercation with an unknown man escalated after he walked away and returned with three others.
Police say the woman was punched in the face and shot in the back with a B-B gun before the four ran away. The woman suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The suspects are described as being between the ages of 17 and 21.

Father of TT player Naina Jaiswal files complaint against unknown person
Table Tennis player Naina Jaiswal's father has filed a Police complaint against an unknown person for allegedly harassing her on social media.
Gajarao Bhupal, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Cybercrime Crime Security here said a case was registered late last night.
"We have received a complaint from the father of International Table Tennis player Naina Jaiswal stating that she was being harassed by some unknown person on Instagram. A case was registered late last night," he said. The police are investigating the matter.

Author Salman Rushdie attacked on stage in New York State
Salman Rushdie, the author whose writing led to death threats from Iran in the 1980s, was attacked Friday as he was about to give a lecture in western New York.
An Associated Press reporter witnessed a man storm the stage at the Chautauqua Institution and begin punching or stabbing Rushdie as he was being introduced. The author was taken or fell to the floor, and the man was restrained.

Deadline day to register as UCP member to vote for new leader
It's deadline day to buy a ten-dollar Alberta United Conservative membership to vote for the next party leader and premier.
The party will then go through the memberships to confirm information and expects to have the final tally on how many have been sold in about two weeks or so.
Seven candidates are on the ballot seeking to replace Premier Jason Kenney in the party's top job.
The next key date in the race is the second debate, slated for August 30th in Edmonton.
Kenney announced in May he was quitting after receiving a lukewarm 51 per cent support in a party leadership review.
