Ottawa launches consultations on Indigenous ownership of Trans Mountain pipeline

Finance Minister Bill Morneau says the federal government is launching a new set of consultations with Indigenous groups. It will determine if and how they might take part in ownership of the Trans Mountain pipeline and its expansion project. The cost to Canadian taxpayers to build the Trans Mountain pipeline has ballooned to 12.6-billion dollars from its initial estimate of 7.4-billion dollars. A plane carrying Canadians from Wuhan, China, has landed at a military base in Ontario where they will spend 14 days under quarantine. The evacuation flight was arranged by the Canadian government. All of Canada's evacuees will stay at Canadian Forces Base Trenton in Trenton, Ontario, where they will be monitored for the virus that has caused hundreds of deaths in Wuhan. The federal government has chartered a second flight to bring Canadians home from the centre of the new coronavirus outbreak next week. Report about a fatal train derailment ready to be compiled

The Transportation Safety Board says it is ready to compile its report about a fatal train derailment near the Alberta-British Columbia boundary last year. A Canadian Pacific Railway grain train was stopped on a mountain slope near Field, B-C last February when it began moving and plummeted off a bridge. A conductor, engineer and trainee were killed. The safety agency says only the 13 cars and tail-end locomotive that remained on the track were recovered for examination. No data could be retrieved from the recorder in the lead locomotive because it was too damaged.

First charter flight to bring 211 Canadians home from Wuhan

Foreign Affairs Minister Francois Philippe Champagne says that the first charter flight from Wuhan will bring 211 Canadians home. Addressing a media briefing he said that a second charter flight is being considered. Champagne informed that weather complications delayed the flight to Wuhan by 4 hours. Police seize $10 million in cocaine and meth

A Calgary man is facing charges after nearly 100 kilograms of cocaine and meth was seized from a vehicle in southern Alberta last week. Calgary police say the bust resulted from an investigation launched in November 2019 into a man thought to be involved in drug trafficking across Canada. Officers stopped the suspect Thursday while he was driving near Dorothy, Alta. about an hour and a half east of Calgary. The federal government has notified Canadians waiting to be evacuated from Wuhan, China that they will be flown back to Canada later this week. The Canadian Press has obtained a copy of a letter sent to Canadians and permanent residents currently in the city that is the epicentre of the novel coronavirus outbreak. On August 19, 2026, at approximately 8:45 p.m., West Shore RCMP Frontline officers responded to a report of a single-vehicle collision involving a pickup truck near the intersection of Island Highway and Wale Road in Colwood.
