Police say they believe a Calgary woman who disappeared more than five years ago was a victim of a homicide. Tammie Doreen Howard, who was 49 when she vanished, was last heard from on Dec. 24, 2016, and reported missing by her family four months later. Staff Sgt. Martin Schiavetta says investigators initially believed it was a missing person case but have followed many leads and determined Howard was killed. An Alberta legislature member who left the Opposition NDP caucus over a computer hacking investigation says he will remain in the house as an Independent and not seek re-election in 2023. Thomas Dang says in a statement that Albertans are facing a number of crucial issues, including inflation and climate change, and his predicament is distracting the NDP on those problems. An evacuation order is in place for parts of west-central Alberta as a wildfire burns in the area. The 366-hectare fire, which is about 19 kilometres west of Nordegg, was discovered Tuesday and initially responded well to firefighting efforts. EDMONTON - The Alberta government plans to expand the range of supports available to victims of crime starting this fall. Justice Minister Tyler Shandro said Tuesday that the changes, set to begin Sept. 1, aim to give additional help to victims of violence who face complex and unique problems. Among the changes, victims needing help coping with a severe brain injury would be able to access up to $100,000 with ongoing supplemental benefits of $1,000 a month.
