Female firefighter and paramedic resign from Leduc Fire Services over on-the-job harassment allegations

A female firefighter and paramedic has resigned from Leduc Fire Services south of Edmonton over on-the-job harassment allegations. Megan Wright ended her seven-year career with a speech on Monday night to city council. Wright said she brought allegations of sexual misconduct to superiors and was questioned instead of getting support. In February, two other female firefighters filed a proposed class-action lawsuit against the city with similar allegations of harassment, bullying, discrimination and abuse. At the council meeting, Mayor Bob Young called Wright's allegations alarming, but said he

Suncor Energy facing criticism after announcing plans to divest its wind and solar assets to focus on hydrogen and renewable fuels instead

Suncor Energy is facing criticism after announcing plans to divest its wind and solar assets to focus on hydrogen and renewable fuels instead. The move to sell eight wind power projects in Saskatchewan, Alberta and Ontario comes as a new UN report on climate change says wind and solar technologies are the two best avenues to fight climate change. The Calgary-based energy giant, which has set a goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050, says selling the assets will bring more ``fit and focus'' to its portfolio. But Greenpeace Canada says the timing of Suncor's announcement is akin to ``buyi

Association of Alberta's 69 counties and municipal districts rejects a proposed plan to create a provincial police force

The association made up of Alberta's 69 counties and municipal districts has rejected a proposed plan to create a provincial police force. Premier Jason Kenney said late last year that a provincial force would increase service levels in rural areas, decrease overall policing costs and increase local input into policing. But Rural Municipalities of Alberta says the model proposed by the United Conservative Party government leaves significant gaps in how it would increase service levels in rural areas. The association says its members have already endorsed a resolution to continue supporting th

President Audrey Poitras says in a news release that bison are native to the Metis Crossing area, but were driven to near-extinction by settlers in the 19th century and ended Metis bison hunts. She says the return of bison marks a milestone in reconciliation. The bison will be released into the Metis Crossing Wildl

The Indigenous groups involved in the delegation also requested the church provide reparations, return artifacts and share any documents about residential schools. Officials with the Calgary Stampede have begun the countdown to this year's Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth. Stampede president Steve McDonough today unveiled the poster for 2022's popular rodeo and exhibition. The poster, designed by 19-year-old artist Kane Pendry of Edmonton, captures the spirit of the rodeo's relay races. The popular chuckwagon races were cancelled. McDonough says there will be a full parad

B.C. Provincial Election Turnout Hits 30-Year Low at 48.14%

Voter turnout in British Columbia’s provincial election has dropped to its lowest level in at least 30 years. According to preliminary figures from Elections BC, only 48.14 per cent of registered voters cast their ballots this time, down from 53.86 per cent in the 2020 election held during the COVID-19 pandemic and 58.45 per cent in 2024. Experts believe the sharp decline may be linked to former Premier David Eby’s decision to call a snap election two years ahead of schedule, as well as the timing of municipal elections around the same period. According to the report, the B.C. NDP received

Party leader Emily Lowan won in Saanich North and the Islands, while Jeremy Valeriote was re-elected in West Vancouver–Sea to Sky. Speaking to the media, Lowan acknowledged that making the Green Party's voice heard in the legislature would be a major challenge. However, she said the party wo
