Sentencing hearing begins for men convicted of leading Coutts blockade
A sentencing hearing is set to start today for three men convicted of helping co-ordinate a blockade at the Canada-U.S. border at Coutts, Alta., in protest of COVID-19 rules and restrictions.
Alex Van Herk, Marco Van Huigenbos and Gerhard (George) Janzen were each found guilty in April of mischief over $5,000.
They were charged for their roles in the blockade that tied up cross-border traffic for two weeks in early 2022.
Defence lawyers didn't call evidence during the trial, and the three accused didn't testify.

Most-recent Edmonton cold weather response ends Monday
With temperatures set to rise, the City of Edmonton says it will deactivate its extreme weather response on Monday at 9 a-m.
The city will stop running its expanded overnight shuttle service and overnight emergency shelter this week. The extreme weather response was activated on December 30th, due to the extreme cold.

Edmonton police charge man in partner's homicide after woman found dead on riverbank
Edmonton Police have laid charges after a woman was found dead on a bank of the North Saskatchewan River last week.
In a news release, police say a 31-year-old man has been arrested and charged with second degree murder. The man and the victim were known to each other, the release says. The victim has been identified as 43-year-old Ashley Burke. Police say her death is considered an intimate partner homicide.
They say they will continue to withhold the cause of death for investigative purposes.

Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi to seek Edmonton riding nomination
Alberta NDP Leader Naheed Nenshi says he's seeking the party's nomination to run as a candidate in Edmonton.
The Edmonton-Strathcona seat became vacant after former NDP leader and premier Rachel Notley resigned her seat effective Dec. 30. Before taking the helm of the Opposition NDP, Nenshi served as mayor of Calgary for more than a decade.
He says he's still a proud Calgarian but already splits his time between his home city and the provincial capital and is looking forward to learning more about Edmonton.

Athabasca 'chop shop' bust yields millions in stolen vehicles
Police in a community north of Edmonton say they have recovered millions of dollars in stolen property after dismantling a chop shop.
Athabasca R-C-M-P say a G-P-S tracking system in a vehicle that was reported stolen on Sunday led police to a rural property, where they say stolen items were being dismantled and repurposed for illegal resale.
Police say they found multiple stolen vehicles including semi-trucks and trailers, off-road vehicles, and heavy equipment and parts. A 36-year-old man from Athabasca is facing charges.

New year brings new Alberta taxes, electricity 'rate of last resort'
Alberta's electricity ``rate of last resort''starts today, replacing the province's previous default rate forconsumers who don't have a contract.
The rate is set at about 12 cents per kilowatt hour until 2027. It's meant to shield against price spikes, as the previous option fluctuated from month to month.
Retailers must confirm with customers whether they want to sign on to a competitive rate, which can be much lower.
Albertans also start paying today a tax on vaping products to fall in line with existing federal taxes.

RCMP charge 18-year-old with second-degree murder in central Alberta
Mounties in central Alberta have charged a man with second-degree murder. Officers responded to a call Saturday about a man on a streetcorner near downtown Red Deer suffering from injuries caused by a bladed weapon.
The man died at the scene. He has been identified as 43-year-old Anthony Spiller of Red Deer.
Police say a suspect was located nearby and arrested. An 18-year-old man from Red Deer was remanded into custody and is set to appear in court later this week.

Naheed Nenshi Eyes Edmonton-Strathcona Seat
Alberta's opposition NDP leader, Naheed Nenshi, is seeking a riding to contest a seat in the legislature. The former Calgary mayor has been leading the party for six months but is not yet an MLA.
The United Conservative Party (UCP) is closely watching his moves. It is believed he may declare his riding for the 2025 provincial election.
Rachel Notley, who led the NDP for many years, announced her resignation in January this year. In June, Nenshi was elected as leader in a landslide victory.

Unofficial count shows NDP wins byelection in Lethbridge, Alta. By Lisa Johnson
Alberta's opposition New Democratic Party has won the provincial byelection in Lethbridge-West, holding onto a riding it has held since 2015.
According to the unofficial vote count late Wednesday night, the Elections Alberta website reports that NDP candidate Rob Miyashiro secured 7,239 votes with all 57 polls reporting.
The United Conservative Party's John Middleton-Hope trailed him by 1,150 ballots. The Alberta Party's Layton Veverka finished the race a distant third with only 233 votes.
