Vancouver police say a man with a lengthy criminal record - including more than 50 prior convictions - is back in custody after allegedly stealing a police car and driving it dangerously through a park filled with families on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 10:45 a.m. in East Vancouver, when officers stopped to assist a woman in distress. While police were helping the woman, the 41-year-old suspect allegedly jumped into the unattended patrol vehicle and sped off, driving toward a group of families gathered at Templeton Park. B.C. NDP Leader David Eby says a re-elected New Democrat government will strengthen police resources to fight illegal guns and gang-linked violence, pledging continued support for federal gun control laws and provincial anti-gang programs. Speaking at a news conference in Surrey, flanked by four NDP candidates with law enforcement backgrounds, Eby said his government would ensure police have the tools, training, and technology needed to keep weapons out of the hands of criminal organizations and prevent domestic violence tragedies. Eby highlighted Surrey as a community that has “felt the rea

Canada marks one year since Hamas attack with vigils, protests and calls for peace amid rising tensions

Ceremonies, community gatherings and demonstrations are taking place across Canada today to mark one year since the Hamas attack on Israel, which triggered the ongoing war in Gaza and deeply affected Jewish, Muslim and Arab communities across the country. The October 7, 2023 assault killed more than 1,200 Israelis, with 250 others taken hostage, sparking an Israeli military offensive that Gaza health officials say has now left over 41,000 people dead. The conflict’s humanitarian and emotional toll has been felt globally - including in Canada, where families mourn victims on both sides and co

A Canadian citizen stranded in Lebanon with his family is pleading for evacuation as Israeli airstrikes continue to hit areas near Beirut, deepening fears among thousands of Canadians with roots in the region. Jalal Tabaja, a father of four Canadian children, said he has relocated his family to a hotel in a quieter area north of Beirut, but nowhere feels safe as explosions echo across the capital. NDP warns parliamentary gridlock could shape confidence votes as Conservative–Liberal standoff deepens

NDP House Leader Peter Julian says his party wants to advance key legislation before the next federal election, but warns that the current parliamentary dysfunction is becoming a serious concern - one that could influence how New Democrats vote in future confidence motions. In the past three weeks, two Conservative non-confidence motions have failed to topple the Liberal minority government. The Opposition, however, has vowed to continue pressing for more such votes, arguing that the government no longer has the moral authority to govern. Julian accused the Conservatives of acting as “agents

Supreme Court upholds stronger compensation rules for Canadian air passengers on international flights

In a major victory for Canadian travellers, the Supreme Court of Canada has upheld federal regulations that strengthen compensation rights for passengers facing flight delays, cancellations, or damaged luggage on international flights. The country’s top court unanimously dismissed an appeal by Air Canada, Porter Airlines, and 16 other carriers that had challenged the Air Passenger Protection Regulations (APPR) introduced in 2019. The airlines had argued that the rules violated international aviation standards under the Montreal Convention and exceeded the authority of the Canadian Transporta

Metro Vancouver Board Delays 2027 Budget Vote Until New Board Takes Office

The Metro Vancouver Board has postponed a vote on its 2027 budget and five-year financial plan during its final meeting on Friday. Newly elected Surrey Mayor Doug McCallum had recently called for the meeting to be cancelled, arguing that voters had replaced mayors in 13 of the region’s 21 municipalities. He said there was little point in the outgoing board making decisions about future budgets and plans. Port Coquitlam Mayor Brad West and Delta Coun. Dylan Kruger were among several leaders who supported the decision. They argued that the current board had lost its mandate and that the incomi
