British Columbia's economic recovery last year was stronger than forecast with the province's audited budget numbers showing a surplus of $1.3 billion, in contrast with an earlier projection of a deficit nearing $10 billion. Federal government says it will build 17,000 homes, pegs cost at $2 billion

The federal government says it will spend more than $2 billion to build 17,000 homes, including thousands of affordable units. Three men dead after a fiery crash on the Trans-Canada Highway

Police say three men died in a fiery crash that closed the Trans-Canada Highway in Yoho National Park for 37 hours. RCMP say the collision just west of the British Columbia-Alberta boundary happened just before 6:50 a-m Sunday. The preliminary investigation suggests a westbound semi truck hauling cattle crossed over the centre line and hit an eastbound semi-truck hauling lumber. All but one of the cows also died. The highway reopened around 8 p-m last night.

Pakistan: 13 killed, several missing after boat capsizes

At least 13 people were killed and many remained missing after a boat carrying around 25 flood victims capsized in the swollen Indus River in Pakistan's Sindh province on Monday, local media reported. The incident took place in Bilawalpur village in Sindh's Sehwan city when a boat taking flood victims from submerged villages to a safer location capsized. The deputy commissioner said that the death toll rose to 13; while eight people have been rescued. Bryan Singleton hired as new chief of Leduc Fire Services

Firefighters in the City of Leduc, south of Edmonton, will have a new boss this fall after its last permanent fire chief stepped down earlier this year. George Clancy resigned in March after he was named in a lawsuit alleging sexual assault, misconduct and discrimination within the fire department. The lawyer representing the plaintiffs in that case expects it to be heard in court by early fall. None of the allegations have been proven in court. Bryan Singleton, who recently served as a Deputy Fire Chief in Edmonton, will start on September 26th.

NASA has scrubbed the launch of its new moon rocket on a no-crew test flight after a cascade of last-minute problems, including unexplained engine trouble. The next launch attempt will not take place until Friday at the earliest. The 322-foot Space Launch System rocket was set to lift off Monday morning from Florida with three test dummies aboard on its first flight, a mission to propel a capsule into orbit around the moon. A 45-year-old man is feared drowned after falling into Okanagan Lake while riding an inflatable tube being towed behind a boat, according to West Kelowna RCMP.
