Alberta proposes bill to merge continuing care rules, strengthen enforcement

Alberta has introduced a bill to consolidate rules on continuing care for more consistent and stronger enforcement. Health Minister Jason Copping says the aim is to bring together six related pieces of legislation and three standards of care, some going back more than 30 years. All care facilities including home care, designated supported living facilities, and hospices would be licensed and regulated. There would be more authority for the minister to monitor and enforce standards, and penalties for violations would increase to $100,000 a day from the current maximum of $1,000. The government

'Creative way to make a point': Alberta premier defends using slap meme of actor

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is defending the use of a meme from the Oscars as a contemporary way to draw attention to what he considers failing green energy policies. The meme, shared widely online, is a photo of actor Will Smith slapping comedian Chris Rock on stage over comments Rock made about Smith's wife at the Hollywood awards show on Sunday. In the version shared on Kenney's social media accounts, the word ``Reality'' is written in text over Smith with ``Green Energy Policies'' in text over Rock. Opinions on the premier's use of the meme have varied online, with some critics saying it

B.C. prepares to strengthen protections for homebuyers

Amendments to the Property Law Act introduced on Monday, March 28, 2022, will enable the creation of a new Homebuyer Protection Period to protect people buying a home in a challenging real estate market. The Homebuyer Protection Period, sometimes called a "right of recission," responds to concerns that in the highly competitive housing market, buyers are reporting pressure to submit offers without basic conditions intended to protect their interests. The amendments would enable the creation of a period to give people buying a home more time to consider their offers, ensure financing and obtain

Metis and Inuit Canadians meet Pope Francis at the Vatican; Pope did not offer an apology

A Fraser Valley resident is among the Metis and Inuit Canadians who met with Pope Francis at the Vatican today. Pixie Wells, from the Abbotsford area, says it was a proud moment to be a two-spirit person in the room with the pope. Wells says First Nations are bringing back the cultural importance of two-spirit individuals as leaders and healers, an importance that was lost during colonization and more than a century of forced residential schools. During today's meetings, the pope did not offer an apology for the Catholic Church's role in residential schools but more meetings are slated with t

Vancouver police track and arrest a suspect within 40 minutes of a violent assault in downtown Vancouver

Vancouver police say they tracked and arrested a suspect within 40 minutes of a violent assault in downtown Vancouver. A statement from police says yesterday's assault, the latest stranger attack in the city, briefly knocked out the 18-year-old victim as she walked through the downtown core around noon. Passers-by, including a doctor, helped the injured exchange student who was taken to hospital as a precaution, while officers canvassed businesses for video that could identify the suspect. Using those details, police say a 26-year-old Coquitlam man wanted on a Mental Health Act warrant was sp

Liberals launch negotiations to buy F-35 fighter jets

The Liberal government is entering into final negotiations on purchasing the F-35 fighter jet. Procurement Minister Filomena Tassi and Defence Minister Anita Anand are announcing the decision at a news conference this afternoon. The move doesn't mean a deal to purchase the stealth fighter from U.S. defence giant Lockheed Martin is officially done. The government still has the option to begin talks with Saab about its Gripen fighter should negotiations with Lockheed Martin stall. Canada plans to buy 88 new fighter jets to replace its CF-18s, budgeting up to $19 billion for the purchase. The go

Alberta AI Data Centres Face Public Scrutiny at Lacombe Town Hall

Alberta’s Minister of Technology and Innovation, Nate Glubish, is holding a town hall meeting in Lacombe this evening to hear residents’ views and concerns about artificial intelligence (AI) data centres. Plans to establish large-scale data centres in the area have faced opposition from some local residents and environmental advocates. B.C. Government’s Decision to Shut Public Employee Directory Sparks Transparency Debate

The B.C. government’s decision under Premier David Eby to suddenly shut down its online directory of government employees to the general public has sparked a political controversy in the province. Opposition parties have accused the government of hiding information from the public and undermining transparency. The government, however, says the decision was made to protect employees’ safety, privacy and cybersecurity. Through the directory, members of the public could previously find out which employees worked in different government departments, their positions and how to contact them. Lan

Poilievre Targets Liberal Government Over ‘Catch-and-Release’ Bail System

The issue of bail for serious offenders in Canada has once again come under the spotlight. Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre has criticized the Liberal government, accusing it of allowing dangerous offenders to remain in the community because of what he calls weak bail laws. Poilievre pointed to a recent incident in Windsor, Ont., involving 22-year-old Qasim Sabi, who has been accused of sexually assaulting two young boys. Police say Sabi was already facing allegations in an earlier case and was out under court-ordered conditions when the latest incidents allegedly occurred. According to po
