Only road leading to the Sasquatch Mountain briefly re-opened

The only road leading to the Sasquatch Mountain Resort near Mission has been briefly re-opened after it was blocked by a mudslide on Friday. A Transportation Ministry spokeswoman says emergency repairs had progressed enough to allow for a one-way opening of the road for a short time to allow those still stuck at the resort to drive out of the area. But she says in a statement that a lot of work still needs to be done before the road can be opened up to regular traffic. Snow alerts issued in several areas of British Columbia

Environment Canada has issued snow alerts in several areas of British Columbia for Tuesday. Special weather statements cover eastern and inland Vancouver Island, the Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, the Sunshine Coast and Metro Vancouver. The forecaster says snowfall amounts will vary significantly depending on elevation and how close the area is to the water. It says five to 20 centimetres of wet snow is expected with the highest amounts likely over Metro Vancouver and the Fraser Valley, where the snow is expected to persist the longest. Oscar Arfmann has been sentenced to life in prison without eligibility for parole for 25 years for ambushing and shooting a police officer in Abbotsford in November 2017. 14-year-old snowboarder found safe and sound at B.C.'s Sun Peaks ski resort

The RCMP say a 14-year-old snowboarder who was missing near Kamloops, B.C., has been found ``safe and sound.'' The Mounties say the boy took a shuttle to the Sun Peaks Resort on Sunday morning but failed to catch the return shuttle to Kamloops in the afternoon. It was confirmed that the teen used the chairlift up the mountain and his parents called police Sunday evening, when a search began.

Two men found dead, third still missing in B.C. search that involved hundreds

There's been a tragic end to a weekend search for three young men on southern Vancouver Island.RCMP Staff Sgt. Janelle Shoihet says the vehicle the three men were in was located near Sooke River Road on Sunday and the bodies of two of the men have been recovered.She says the search for the third man continues with the help of Juan de Fuca Search and Rescue.Police said in an earlier news release that Cory Mills, Eric Blackmore and AJ Jensen, all 20 years old, were last seen at a home in Sooke, B.C., late Friday night.The men were in a 2004 blue Dodge Dakota and it was unclear where they going.

Surrey man sentenced to nearly five years in prison in extortion-related shooting and arson case

A Surrey Provincial Court judge has sentenced Abhijeet Kingra to nearly five years in prison for his role in a 2024 extortion-related shooting and arson targeting a Surrey home. According to court records, Kingra pleaded guilty on July 6 to charges of discharging a firearm at a residence and committing arson. The offences stem from an Aug. 10, 2024 incident in which a home belonging to a person who had reportedly received extortion threats was shot at and set on fire.
