13 new COVID-19 cases, no new deaths reported in B.C.

The B.C. government reported an additional 13 cases of COVID-19 on Friday. The additions bring the total number of cases in the province to 2,947, with 162 listed as active. The province did not report any additional deaths. There have been a total of 177 deaths in British Columbia related to the novel coronavirus. Winnipeg police charge 14 year old in four recent shootings, including a homicide

Winnipeg police have charged a 14 year old with four recent shootings, including a homicide on Canada Day. The boy, who cannot be named under the Youth Criminal Justice Act, faces one count of first-degree murder in the death of a 27 year old woman. Canada's long-term care system failed elders, before and during COVID-19: report

A report on Canada's nursing homes says Canada has failed in its duty to protect vulnerable elders. The highly critical report examines the issue in light of the COVID-19 crisis. The Royal Society of Canada found the pandemic was a ``shock wave'' that exposed many long-standing deficiencies in the system and caused high levels of ``physical, mental and emotional suffering'' for seniors. Scores of seniors died in the care homes, especially in BC, Ontario and Quebec. The report says 81 per cent of all COVID-19 deaths have been in care homes.

Teacher in Delta, B.C., charged with child pornography related offences

The RCMP says a school teacher in Delta has been found with child pornography. Mounties say their investigation began more than a year ago when they received an alert from an electronic service provider alleging that an account user was in possession of child pornography. They say 52 year old Surrey resident Elazar Reshef has been charged with three counts of child-pornography related offences. Investigators say no children in the Lower Mainland have been identified as potential victims based on a review of the available evidence, but anyone with information is asked to contact police.
