Mom says Canadian woman in 'inhumane' U.S. detention, Global Affairs can't intervene

Global Affairs says it can't intervene on behalf of a Canadian being held in an Arizona immigration detention centre, where the woman's mother says conditions are "inhumane and deeply concerning." Alexis Eagles says Vancouver businesswoman and former actress Jasmine Mooney is being detained at the San Luis Regional Detention Center with about 30 people in a single concrete cell. Eagles says in a social media post that the cell's fluorescent lights are never turned off, and there are no mats or blankets and limited bathroom facilities. She says her daughter had been working in the United States

BC Hydro bans Tesla from charger rebate program as part of tariff fight

BC Hydro says Tesla products have been removed from its electric vehicle rebate program as part of the province's fight back against U.S. tariff threats. It says on its website that the move is part of the government's move to give preference to Canadian goods and exclude U.S. goods from rebates if practical. A message on its website says the exclusion became effective on Wednesday, but Tesla products that were purchased or received pre-approval for rebates before then are still qualified. The rebate program covers up to 50 per cent of the purchase cost and installation of a home charger, up t

Efforts Underway to Resolve Rift Between Bikram Singh Majithia and Shiromani Akali Dal

Bikram Singh Majithia is reportedly upset with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD), prompting efforts to reconcile and address the growing rift between him and SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal. According to reports, Shiromani Akali Dal’s working president Balwinder Singh Bhunder and former party MLA Virsa Singh Valtoha recently visited Majithia’s residence in Chandigarh to discuss the matter. However, they were unable to meet him. The conflict within the party began when the SGPC (Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee) removed Jathedars Sehban Giani Raghbir Singh and Sultan Singh. Trudeau says he's 'proud of Canadians' in video posted on his last day in office

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau issued a farewell message to Canadians today as he marks his last full day in office. In a video posted to X, Trudeau says he's proud to have served a country full of people who stand up for what's right, rise to every occasion and "always have each others' backs when it matters most." Liberal Leader Mark Carney will be sworn in as Canada's 24th prime minister at a ceremony at Rideau Hall Friday after Trudeau's formal resignation. Trudeau says that while this may be his last day in the job, he will always be "boldly and unapologetically Canadian." He says his only

U.S. tariffs push Ottawa to invest more in Canadian steel, aluminum projects

Industry Minister Francois Philippe Champagne says he's telling his department to prioritize investments in projects that primarily use Canadian steel and aluminum — part of Ottawa's reply to the Trump administration's trade war. Champagne says the move is in response to the "unfair and unjustified" 25 per cent tariffs on steel and aluminum levied by U.S. President Donald Trump on Wednesday. Canada responded to Trump's steel and aluminum levies with 25 per cent tariffs on $29.8 billion worth of American goods, which took effect just after midnight Thursday. Champagne says Canadian steel and

Mark Carney set to name cabinet ministers at Friday morning ceremony

Mark Carney will reveal the makeup of his cabinet on Friday morning, a collection of Liberal ministers who will see Canada through the next election. The swearing-in ceremony for Carney's government is set for 11 a.m. at Rideau Hall. It is widely expected that the new cabinet table will have fewer seats than the 37 under Justin Trudeau. Seven ministers in the current cabinet have said they won't run in the next election, including Justice Minister Arif Virani and Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay. The core team which has played a key role in the trade war with the U.S. is planning to seek

Liberals will table the federal budget on Nov. 4

Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne says the Liberals will table the federal budget on Nov. 4. The fiscal update will be the federal Liberals' first under Prime Minister Mark Carney. The prime minister has billed the budget as one of both cost-cutting and investment as Ottawa looks to protect Canada's economy against U.S. trade disruption. The federal budget typically arrives in the spring but the Liberals delayed the update until the fall. Carney has announced a series of big-ticket spending items since the spring election, including billions of dollars in new spending
