COVID-19 outbreak declared at nephrology unit of a B.C. hospital, 104 new cases reported

A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared in the nephrology unit at a hospital in Surrey, B.C. Fraser Health's interim chief medical health officer says a patient tested positive for the virus on Tuesday. Dr. Elizabeth Brodkin says the unit at Surrey Memorial Hospital has fewer than a dozen patients, and staff are being monitored and screened. One killed, two others hurt in crash that closed B.C.'s Massey Tunnel for hours

Police say alcohol may have been a factor in a head-on crash in the George Massey Tunnel that killed one person and injured two others. Richmond RCMP say a vehicle travelling south on Highway 99 early Wednesday crossed the centre line, hitting an oncoming vehicle. A 61 year old woman from Richmond who was travelling northbound died in the crash, while a passenger in her vehicle was hurt. A man comes within a metre of stepping on an unexploded World War II mortar in Okanagan

A man who was hiking in Kalamalka Lake Provincial Park in the Okanagan has a warning for other park users. Andrew Nydam says he was taking photos Monday when he came within a metre of stepping on an unexploded World War II mortar. The area was used for military training decades ago. Police say the device wasn't on a public trail and a Canadian Forces disposal unit will collect and dispose of the mortar.

15 year old girl washed off miscreants, who tried to snatch her phone at Deen Dayal Upadhyay Nagar area in Jalandhar on August 30. She was attacked with a sharp weapon. Vancouver home prices rose in August amid above-average sales rate

Metro Vancouver home sales hit 3,047 in August at a benchmark price of $1.04 million, as the housing market continued its recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. The Real Estate Board of Greater Vancouver says the number of homes sold last month was nearly 20 per cent higher than the 10-year average for August, although there was a slight decrease from the 3,128 homes sold in July. The benchmark price in August was 5.3 per cent higher than August 2019 and 0.7 per cent higher than July. RCMP marine unit rescues 11 people after canoe overturns in Burrard Inlet

Eleven people, including several youths, were rescued from the waters of Burrard Inlet after a large canoe overturned near Ambleside Beach on Saturday afternoon, according to the BC RCMP. Police said officers with the RCMP Tactical Marine Operations Group (TMOG), who were conducting patrols in Burrard Inlet, received a distress call over Marine VHF Channel at about 3:30 p.m. on July 5 reporting an overturned canoe off Ambleside Beach. Four TMOG vessels were dispatched to the scene. According to the RCMP, officers arriving at the location found all 11 occupants clinging to the overturned canoe.

Report says Alberta has widest gender pay gap in Canada

Women in Alberta continue to earn less than men than in any other province, according to a new report from the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA). The report found that women in Alberta earn 64 cents for every dollar earned annually by men, compared with a national average of 72 cents. Looking at weekly earnings, women in the province earn 71 cents for every dollar earned by men, while the national average is 80 cents, according to the report. Police say six family members, including children, worked as a team to pull off a jewelry store heist in Calgary. They say the family went into the store at CF Market Mall last month. U.S. tourist dies after cyclist collision at downtown Vancouver crosswalk

A 72-year-old man from the United States has died after being struck by a cyclist while crossing a downtown Vancouver street, according to the Vancouver Police Department.
