Mumbai Police has issued a notice to American citizen and Bollywood actor Imran Khan, directing him to leave India by October 28 over alleged violations of immigration and foreigner-related laws, officials said on Thursday.
The action reportedly came after Khan, the nephew of Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan, participated in a protest in Mumbai on October 10. The demonstrators were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Police briefly detained the actor during the protest.
A police official said Khan is an American citizen and not an Indian national. Under the relevant provisions of immigration and foreigner-related laws, foreign nationals are prohibited from participating in political protests or political activities on Indian soil, the official added.
