Punjabi actor Jagjeet Sandhu, known for his theatre roots and powerful on-screen presence, visited Connect FM Canada to speak about his upcoming Bollywood film Diplomat, starring John Abraham.
Sandhu said he remains committed to cinema that prioritizes storytelling. "I believe in cinema that is driven by script, not stars. The story should always take precedence," he told Connect FM, reflecting on his theatre background.
Sandhu recalled with humour how he landed the role in Diplomat. "Thank God for my thick and bushy eyebrows! When I auditioned, the director said my eyebrows gave a certain depth and seriousness to my character, which made me a perfect fit."
While light-hearted, his anecdote also underscored the importance of authenticity in casting. John Abraham himself has recently praised Sandhu’s performance in Diplomat, noting the strength of his character.
For Punjabi and South Asian film fans in Canada, Sandhu’s perspective resonates with ongoing debates about the industry’s direction — whether films should rely on superstar names or on stronger writing and stories. His remarks suggest that script-driven films are gaining recognition both in Bollywood and in Punjabi cinema.
Diplomat is scheduled to release in theatres on March 14. Sandhu was also recently seen in the Punjabi film Ilti.
