After years of setbacks and a prolonged struggle with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), director Honey Trehan's highly anticipated film, originally titled Punjab 95, has finally debuted. Now streaming exclusively on ZEE5 as Satluj, the film features an impressive cast, including Diljit Dosanjh, Kanwaljeet Singh, Arjun Rampal, Suvinder Vicky, and Geetika Vidya Ohlyan.
Inspired by the life of human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, Satluj delves into one of Punjab's most harrowing periods, addressing the disappearances, alleged extrajudicial killings, and unlawful detentions that occurred during the state’s counter-insurgency efforts against Khalistani militancy in the 1980s and 1990s. The film's official trailer, lasting over two minutes, effectively sets the political and social backdrop of Punjab in 1995.
In a compelling voiceover, Arjun Rampal’s character reveals how some police officers took advantage of the chaotic situation for personal gain while combating militancy. The trailer introduces Suvinder Vicky's character, a policeman who cautions Diljit Dosanjh's Jaswant Singh about the dangers of speaking out against the police, hinting that it could lead to dire consequences.
The film's release marks the end of a nearly three-year uncertainty. On Instagram, director Honey Trehan expressed gratitude to those who supported the film throughout its difficult journey. He reassured viewers that despite the title change, they will experience the complete, uncut version as originally envisioned. "We could not get the previous title of the film. The title is now ‘SATLUJ’. This is the complete film, without any cuts or compromises," he stated, acknowledging the critical role of Diljit and the producers in maintaining the film’s integrity.
