Court halts release of Punjabi film ‘Pitt Siyapa’ over copyright claim

A Chandigarh court has temporarily stayed the release of the upcoming Punjabi film “Pitt Siyapa” following a copyright dispute, according to court proceedings. The film, starring actor Sonam Bajwa, had been scheduled for theatrical release on May 1.

The legal challenge was filed by writer Rajan Nandan, who alleges the film’s storyline is substantially similar to a script he authored. According to Nandan, the script was officially registered in 2021.

Nandan said he first identified similarities after the film’s promotional material was released on March 27, 2026. He subsequently issued a legal notice on April 1, 2026, to parties associated with the film, seeking action over the alleged infringement.

The court’s interim order places the release on hold pending further hearings. Details on the next court date were not immediately available.
