The Punjab government has taken a U-turn on its decision to upgrade 8 government colleges as (autonomous) colleges. Under the autonomous status, these colleges were supposed to have the freedom to take decisions on everything from fees to other matters, but the opposition parties had started to surround the Aam Aadmi Party on this issue.

He said that the Aam Aadmi Party came to power on the issue of education and health, which is now changing the status of government colleges and making them expensive for the poor.

The state Congress had also warned to protest on this issue. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has given orders not to go ahead with this policy.
